Kenya — MCDC
Mathare Child Development Centre & Orphanage — feeding, educating, and housing children in one of Africa's largest slums.
Mathare Child Development Centre
Mathare Valley is one of the oldest and largest slums in Nairobi, Kenya, home to over 500,000 people living in extreme poverty. In this environment, children face hunger, lack of education, disease, and exploitation daily.
The Mathare Child Development Centre (MCDC) was established with the help of Mercy in Action to provide a safe haven for these children. What began as a small feeding program has grown into a comprehensive campus that includes a school, orphanage, dormitories, a feeding program, and vocational training.
Under the tireless leadership of Mama Jane Nuthu, MCDC feeds over 900 children daily, provides education from preschool through grade 12, and houses orphans who have nowhere else to go. Many MCDC graduates have gone on to high school and university through MIA's scholarship program.

What MCDC Provides
A comprehensive approach to breaking the cycle of poverty through care, education, and opportunity.

Daily Feeding Program
Over 900 children receive nutritious meals every day. For many, this is their only reliable meal.

Education (Preschool–12th Grade)
14 grade levels from Preschool 1 & 2 through 12th grade, with dedicated teachers giving children a path out of poverty.

Orphanage & Dormitories
Children who have lost parents find shelter, care, and a loving family environment at MCDC.
University Scholarships
MIA sponsors promising MCDC graduates through high school and university, breaking the cycle of poverty.
Vocational Training
Older students receive practical skills training to prepare them for employment and self-sufficiency.
Medical Care
Basic medical care and health education for children and families, addressing immediate and preventive needs.
Emergency: Flood Damage
Recent flooding has destroyed the boys' dormitory and the campus perimeter wall, displacing over 40 boys. We urgently need funds to rebuild and restore safety for these children. The estimated cost for repairs is significant, and every dollar goes directly to reconstruction.

Breaking the Cycle Through Education
MIA's scholarship program has sent dozens of MCDC graduates to vocational schools and university. These young men and women are the first in their families to receive higher education — and they are transforming their communities as a result.
Sponsoring a child's education is one of the most powerful ways to break the cycle of poverty. For as little as $25/month, you can provide a child with school fees, uniforms, books, and meals.
