The Holy Spirit said through James 2:15-17:

If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food and one of you say unto them "depart in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?  Thus also faith by itself if it does not have works, is dead."

Depart in peace, be warmed and filled are simply “best wishes” for somebody, even if they are said in faith.  When someone is naked and destitute, they need more than “best wishes.”  They need both their physical, and spiritual needs met!  When a person is starving, he can’t eat the Bible you give him nor is his spiritual need greater than his physical need at this point.

So, MIA preaches the gospel that Jesus saves AND provides for people's physical needs of the body.  This is what Mercy In Action is all about and we have found it to work because it is God ordained in His word.  In fact many times, it works best in reverse.  You meet a person's physical needs and he will then be open to the Lord to meet his spiritual needs.
